The Seahawks have been fairly quiet since the end of their offseason program, but quietly made a sound one-year investment in Chester Pitts on Thursday.
Pitts played for Houston from 2002-09, and has vast experience at guard and tackle. And considering the Seahawks’ lack of experience – and proven talent – across their offensive line, Pitts provides more competition at several spots. Max Unger opens training camp as the starting right guard, but he had an uneven rookie season and is also the primary backup to injury-prone center Chris Spencer.
Pitts certainly isn’t a long-term answer at 31 years old. But he does bring much needed depth, and hopefully can be a mentor for Spencer, Unger and some of the team’s other young linemen.
The Hawks also said siyonara to DE Robert Henderson, who was acquired from Detroit for Rob Sims, and LB Anthony Heygood, who finished last season on the practice squad.

Ben Hamilton is expected to step in at left guard.
After spending most of the offseason dumping players and adding scrubs to the roster to use as bodies for offseason workouts, the Seahawks actually made an impactful move by signing OG
Ben Hamilton.
Hamilton is expected to step in on the left side in place of Rob Sims, who was jettisoned to Detroit because he’s a mauler who didn’t fit the zone-blocking scheme Seattle is employing. Hamilton played for nine seasons in Denver, including under new Hawks offensive line guru Alex Gibbs. He fits the mold of the more athletic linemen the Seahawks are seeking.
And talking about the offensive line, don’t be surprised if the Hawks pass on a left tackle with both of their first-round picks on Thursday. If Oklahoma’s Trent Williams is gone by No. 6 as expected, he’s the most athletic of the top-tier offensive tackles this year. They’d probably skip over Russell Okung and Brian Bulaga and pick up a tackle or nine in the middle and later rounds.

Rob Sims can move mountains, but that's not what the Hawks are going for in their running game.
By all accounts,
Rob Sims was the best blocker on a woeful offensive line last season.
So why would the Seahawks tell their most consistent lineman to stay away from team headquarters because he was no longer in the plans and then ship him off to Seattle’s burgeoning Triple-A affiliate in Detroit for a fifth-round pick?
To put it simply, he doesn’t fit in the zone blocking scheme.
At 6-3 and 312 pounds, Sims is at his best as a drive-blocking mauler. Alex Gibbs was brought in to install his legendary zone blocking scheme, which calls for smaller, more athletic linemen who can crack back against defensive linemen and get out on more traps and pulls.
So off goes Sims to join a host of other former Seahawks in the Motor City. Left behind is a mishmash of parts Gibbs can only hope gets an influx from this month’s draft. Don’t be surprised if the Hawks pass on offensive linemen in the first round – Gibbs’ teams have historically picked up linemen in the middle and later rounds.

The other shoe finally dropped for Rob Sims on Monday, as he was shipped off to Detroit for a fifth-round pick. No surprise there – he was told not to show up to the team’s headquarters this offseason because he wasn’t in the team’s plans.
The Hawks then sent a seventh-round pick to Detroit for little-known DE Robert Henderson. Don’t bother getting to know him. The 2008 pick of the Giants finished ‘09 on Detroit’s practice squad.
As much turnover as there has been in the front office, Seattle for some reason continues to deal routinely with Detroit. Perhaps it’s because they have two of the most talent-deficient rosters in the NFL and they just swap each other’s garbage.
Nate Burleson, Mo Morris, Julian Peterson, Rob Sims … all Lions. We got and let go of Corey Redding and will probably never get to know Henderson.

PartyHawks hit the road for a spring training break last week. Most was quiet on the Hawks front while we enjoyed some desert heat and a Griffey walk-off granny.
But things continue to percolate over at the VMac. The two biggest fronts are the Seahawks and Broncos WR Brandon Marshall in the early stages of talking money. If they eventually agree to a contract, the Hawks would then have to negotiate a trade with Denver. Seattle is unlikely to part with it’s No. 6 overall pick, but No. 14 is a possibility.
The other significant news are the rumors about LG Rob Sims heading to Chicago for DE Alex Brown. There is little doubt Sims is a goner – fired and increasingly bitter ex-coach Jim Mora certainly believes so. But it doesn’t appear Brown is the right fit – at least not along with his $5 million salary.
