LenDale didn’t buy in, so he’s shipped out

LenDale White's attitude could land him right out of the NFL.

LenDale White's attitude could land him right out of the NFL.

The initial reaction to LenDale White being released Friday was of significant surprise. After all, just last night I was reading our latest Seahawks update talking about how he’d dropped more than 40 pounds and was likely atop Seattle’s burgeoning list of mediocre running backs.

But the dots started connecting quickly.

There are now reports that White faces a four-game suspension. But more telling was GM John Schneider’s quote in a press release that read: “It became apparent at this time that LenDale was not ready to be a member of the Seattle Seahawks,” Seahawks general manager John Schneider said in a statement released by the team. “It just did not appear to be the right fit at this point in our program. We wish LenDale all the best with his future.”

Translation: LenDale came to Seattle with the same crappy approach to the game that he had in Tennessee.

White long frustrated the Titans’ coaching staff with his lazy approach to the game, party habits and overall lack of buying into the team concept. Remember, this is the same jackass who publicly claimed he dropped 20 pounds by giving up tequila.

In Seattle it was thought he’d have something of a career rebirth. He’d be playing for former USC coach Pete Carroll, who got the best out of White with the Trojans. And he’d have a serious opportunity to win the role of bellcow running back.

In the end, he lasted only a month. The same bad attitude, the same lack of “team” … when you’re not a superstar who can single-handedly win a game, NFL coaches just aren’t going to waste their time with you.

Hawks flirting with T.O.? Say it ain’t so!

If we didn’t have reason enough already not to dump our undying Hawks faith in John Schneider, our strange-browed new GM was on KJR this morning and while he said the team won’t sign WR Terrell Owens unless “something drastic happens” … he didn’t shut the door, either.

Let us count the ways that even kicking the tires on T.O. is a horrific idea:

1) He’s 36, with declining production each of the past two seasons – although we’re almost bound to give him a mulligan while playing for the Bills in ‘09.

2) Did we mention he’s 36? With fading deep speed, he’d be the 23rd possession-type receiver on the team. Granted, he has better size and physical strength than the rest of the group, but this offense desperately needs a playmaker who can stretch the field.

3) Did we mention he’s 36? This team is nowhere close to being competitive … ok, maybe remotely competitive in the terrible NFC West, but not against the league as a whole. What’s the point of bringing in an aging, slowing and emotionally draining prima donna to throw a combustible package into the mix?

OK, rant over. Schneider didn’t say they were pursuing it – we’ll take him at his word until someone spies T.O. hovering over the V-Mac in a Kenmore seaplane.

So long, Mike Teel

With J.P. Losman officially signing with the Hawks on Wednesday, the team dumped its second quarterback in as many days by waiving 2009 sixth-round pick Mike Teel.

Teel landed a low draft slot last year by rallying Rutgers to a strong finish as a senior, but was never considered an elite prospect likely to hold down a starting job in the NFL. Now, he hasn’t managed to hold down so much as a roster spot. He’ll get another shot in someone’s training camp, but Seattle now has a very interesting trio with Losman, a former first-round pick, backing up Matt Hasselbeck and Charlie Whitehurst.

Hawks dump local star for Losman

J.P. Losman is a former first-round pick and a low-risk, high-reward gamble for the 'Hawks.

J.P. Losman is a former first-round pick and a low-risk, high-reward gamble for the 'Hawks.

Mike Reilly’s second stint with the Seahawks lasted exactly two weeks. The record-setting former Central Washington stud clearly didn’t impress the new coaching staff during minicamp, and the Hawks dumped Reilly in favor of former first-round pick J.P. Losman.

Adding Losman is an intriguing move. After flaming out with the Buffalo Bills, he played for Las Vegas in the first season of the UFL last year. Once that season concluded, he caught on with the Raiders for a few games to close out the year.

Losman has a huge arm. He just doesn’t read defenses well and has never been terribly accurate … two fairly important aspects to keeping a starting job in the NFL. But he did hook up routinely with speedster Lee Evans in Buffalo, and is a better fit in a vertical passing game.

Mike Teel should now be seriously concerned about his roster spot. While Reilly wasn’t much of a threat – at least any more of one than Teel is himself – Losman is a big-armed former first-round pick who could easily catch the eye of Pete Carroll & Co. and earn the No. 3 job behind Matt Hasselbeck and Charlie Whitehurst.

This is a signing worth watching. Losman has the physical tools to succeed in the NFL, and if he has matured and learned how to play the position better, this could be a quiet mid-May move that pans out very well in 2010. If the Hawks and/or Hasselbeck struggle badly out of the gate, don’t be surprised if it’s the Whitehurst and Losman show by November.

On a side note, WR Marcus Maxwell was also signed Tuesday.

Scrub Watch: What the Heckendorf?

Apparently Seahawks GM John Schneider spent a good deal of time last season hanging around the practice squad, because he wasted little time in picking WR Kyle Heckendorf off waivers from Detroit.

Heckendorf was undrafted out of North Dakota State, go figure, in 2009. He signed with the Packers and then spent the second half of last season on Detroit’s practice squad. When he was released, the Packers also tried to jump on him. But being a significantly worse team in ‘09, the Hawks got dibs.

Of course, when one scrub’s Seattle journey begins, another’s has to end. Time to close the book on WR Chris Duvalt, who was cut before you got to buy that custom jersey.

Reilly back with Hawks

Mike Reilly hasn't thrown a meaningful pass since his CWU days.

Mike Reilly hasn't thrown a meaningful pass since his CWU days.

Mike Reilly was a record-setting stud at Central Washington, where he ripped up the Division II level against the likes of Minnesota-Duluth. Now he’s back with the Seahawks, getting a second chance to hang onto a low-rung roster spot.

Reilly was signed by Pittsburgh as an undrafted rookie, but failed to make the team after a little preseason action. He has since bounced around looking for NFL work, and was signed by the Rams off Green Bay’s practice squad last December to help St. Louis make it through the season.

Now back in Seattle, he’ll be given a chance during offseason workouts to battle 2009 fifth-round pick Mike Teel for the third job behind Matt Hasselbeck and Charlie Whitehurst.

It’ll be a tense battle to see who wins the right to hold a clipboard and listen to offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates talk to Matt and Charlie through the headset on game days.

Calling all Trojans & Huskies

If you even sniffed a football field at UW or USC, make sure you swing by the V-Mac and drop off an application.

OL Joe Toledo is the latest former Husky to be added to the 80-man roster, signing after a tryout during the recent minicamp. He joins WR Reggie Williams as UWers Pete Carroll is giving a chance to lift themselves off the NFL scrap heap before they’re formally sent to the junk yard. CB Chris Richards, a rookie out of Stony Brook was also signed, but don’t bother learning his name.

To clear room, the Hawks dumped C Pat MacDonald and LB Reggie Carter.
