Hawks land special teams ace Morey

WR Sean Morey has signed a multi-year deal with the Seahawks. Never heard of him? Don’t worry, you probably won’t notice him on game days, either. But that doesn’t make this a “so what” signing by any means.

Morey isn’t much of a threat on the offensive side of the ball, but the 34-year-old is a standout special teams player who was a Pro Bowl alternate last year. Special teams coverage was a weakness, along with most everything else, for Seattle last year. And it never hurts to rob the divisional rivals of another solid veteran.

The Cardinals have taken hit after hit this offseason, and Morey will be laying a few hits as a special teams gunner for the Hawks in 2010.

Marshall, Sims issues simmering on the burner

PartyHawks hit the road for a spring training break last week. Most was quiet on the Hawks front while we enjoyed some desert heat and a Griffey walk-off granny.

But things continue to percolate over at the VMac. The two biggest fronts are the Seahawks and Broncos WR Brandon Marshall in the early stages of talking money. If they eventually agree to a contract, the Hawks would then have to negotiate a trade with Denver. Seattle is unlikely to part with it’s No. 6 overall pick, but No. 14 is a possibility.

The other significant news are the rumors about LG Rob Sims heading to Chicago for DE Alex Brown. There is little doubt Sims is a goner – fired and increasingly bitter ex-coach Jim Mora certainly believes so. But it doesn’t appear Brown is the right fit – at least not along with his $5 million salary.

A look inside the Hawks’ big gamble

Did the Hawks get fleeced by the Chargers to acquire Charlie Whitehurst? Most Hawks fans don’t know a lick about Charlie Whitehurst. And on the surface Pete Carroll & Co. took an enormous leap of faith in moving down 20 spots in a deep draft and giving a $10 million deal to a quarterback who hasn’t thrown a regular-season pass in four NFL seasons.

We can’t give a thumbs up or thumbs down to the deal, to be honest. I was a big fan of Whitehurst’s when he played for Clemson. He big, mobile and has a rocket arm. And he was stuck behind Philip Rivers in San Diego, so it’s not as if the past four years are a testament to his inability to “make it” in the NFL.

But the deal remains curious at best. To gain a little more insight, check out this story by SI.com’s Don Banks.

Kicking the tires

The Hawks brought in a pair of veterans for visits on Thursday. DE Vonnie Holliday is a long-time vet coming off a strong year for Denver. WR Sean Morey has made several stops during his career, his most recent one being with Arizona.

Holliday is a solid line presence who provides some pass rush, while Morey is primarily a special teams player whose role in the offense is typically as a fifth or sixth receiver.

Neither was immediately signed.

Meet Quinton Ganther

RB Quinton Ganther signed with the Seahawks on Wednesday, according to his agent.

The Seahawks continued to leave the faucet on the “trickle” setting in free agency, signing RB Quinton Ganther on Wednesday night. David Canter, one of the more personable agents in the business, announced it on his Twitter page.

(On a side note, it was this time last year I told my boss that if I have to incorporate Tweeting into my job, I’m finding a new career. My soul is officially in the devil’s hands – I sent a half dozen tweets today alone).

But I digress. Who it’s this Mr. Ganther, you ask? OK, maybe you didn’t ask, but we’re going to fill you in anyway.

Ganther is an undersized back who lacks elite speed – usually a double-whammy for a potential career as an NFL running back. He has been on and off the rosters of Tennessee and Washington the past few years, but made a mark for himself as a bowling ball-type runner for Washington when Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts went down last season.

He’s not going to bust many 50-yard touchdown scampers, but he also rarely gets tackled for a loss. So he’s pretty much the anti-Sean Alexander.

So there you have it: Quinton Ganther, your newest Seahawk.

Hawks make big committment to Whitehurst

The Hawks have made a $10 million investment in Charlie Whitehurst's potential. How much is zero NFL completions worth?

Apparently, $10 million if you’re the Seahawks.

That’s what Seattle has given Chargers QB Charlie Whitehurst for a two-year deal. San Diego and Seattle swapped second-round picks as part of the agreement for the Chargers to send the restricted free agent to the Seahawks. San Diego also get’s Seattle’s third-round pick in 2011.

The dollar amount in the contract signals how highly the Hawks view Whitehurst. This isn’t bringing a guy in for an extra camp arm – it could even amount to the Hawks passing on a quarterback in the opening rounds of the draft. With a $10 million committment, Pete Carroll & Co. clearly view Whitehurst as a potential successor to Matt Hasselbeck.

Road paved for Whitehurst to land in Seattle

QB Charlie Whitehurst appears on his way to Seattle.Arizona and Seattle were both searching for veteran backup quarterbacks, and both had interest in deposed Browns QB Derek Anderson and Chargers third-stringer Charlie Whitehurst. With Anderson hooking up with the Cardinals, it appears Whitehurst it headed to the Northwest.

Whitehurst is a restricted free agent, and the fourth-round pick the Hawks got in the Darryl Tapp trade could be turned around and sent to San Diego as compensation.

So who is Charlie Whitehurst … other than the guy who couldn’t beat out Billy Volek for the No. 2 job in sunny S.D?

He’s a 6-5, 220-pound classic drop-back passer. At least, that’s what he was during a prolific career at Clemson. What he is in 2010 is a mystery since he hasn’t thrown a single regular-season pass in four NFL season.

But his size and quality arm should fit the scheme of new offensive coordiantor Jeremy Bates. Initially, he’ll arrive in the Northwest as the primary backup to Matt Hasselbeck. With Seneca Wallace dealt to Cleveland, Mike Teel is the only other quarterback on the roster. If you’re really interested in the type of quarterback Whitehurst is, read our analysis of him coming out of college.

Also expect Seattle to spend a high draft pick on a quarterback. Rumor has it Pete Carroll is interested in Notre Dame’s Jimmy Clausen with the No. 6 or No. 14 overal pick. We’d prefer Carroll holds the quarterback card until the third or fourth round. This roster has far too many holes, particularly along the offensive line, and there certainly is no consensus among NFL scouts that Clausen is a future Pro Bowl quarterback.

Sims next to go?

LG Rob Sims could be the next veteran shipped out of town. He was probably the team’s most consistent lineman last year, but that’s hardly a plaque for the mantlepiece on one of the league’s worst units.

Sims is a restricted free agent, but was only given a fourth-round tender. That means a team would have to give Seattle a fourth-round pick if it signs Sims and Seattle doesn’t match the offer. Or, the Seahawks could broker a deal for different compensation with Sims’ new team.

According to ProFootballTalk.com, a source said Sims is likely to be sent packing before the draft.

Meet Chris Clemons

DE Darryl Tapp was dealt to Philly for pass rusher Chris Clemons and a fourth-round pick.

DE Darryl Tapp was dealt to Philly for pass rusher Chris Clemons and a fourth-round pick.

At the risk of sending Grady into a deeper depression of Darryl Tapp being shipped cross-country to Philly, we thought we’d tell you a little more about the newest Seahak, Chris Clemons.

Why dwell in the past, right, Grady?

Tapp spent four decent seasons in Seattle as an undersized situational pass rusher – at least, that’s what he should be. He was often forced into more significant playing time due to injuries and a lack of superior talent.

Clemons is a six-year veteran with 20 career sacks. He’s mostly just a guy, but did appear in every game the past three seasons for an Eagles defense with a ton more talent than Seattle’s. At 6-feet-2, 240 pounds, Clemons is much bigger than Tapp and should work as a situational pass rusher.

Throw in a fourth-round draft pick, and there really wasn’t much to lose for the Hawks out of this deal. Tapp was a good locker room guy, but he needs to be a roving pass rusher, which he’ll get a chance to be in Philly.
