Louis Rankin ... the newest Hawk.

Louis Rankin ... the newest Hawk.

Coach Jim Mora spent the first 4:45 of his Wednesday press conference going over the Seahawks’ abundance of injuries. Could be longer, but I had to pause it there.

The skinny: QB Matt Hasselbeck feels pain when he breathes deep and he can’t run. Two pretty key areas for a quarterback; MLB Lofa Tatupu looks unlikely to play again against the Colts; LT Walter Jones didn’t suffer a “medical setback,” but he feels pain in his knee during longer practices that would prevent him from making it through a game.

The silver lining? CB Josh Wilson might return earlier than expected. Hold onto your hats!

And for you UW fans, the team did sign former Husky RB Louis Rankin to the practice squad. That’s right, Huskes are picked up by the Hawks off the Raiders’ scrap heap. You ain’t “back” yet.

TSXlogo2A day after calling out veteran kicker Olindo Mare for missing two field goals in the team’s 25-19 loss to Chicago, Seattle Seahawks head coach Jim Mora expressed regret for his harsh words.

“I have very high, high expectations for Olindo, and it’s because of the work that he’s done in this league,” Mora said. “He’s been an outstanding kicker, and he’s done a lot of great things for us. I think I let the emotion of the game get to me in my answers about Olindo.” … (READ COMPLETE REPORT)

Bears-Hawks USA Today preview

usat_logo2So these I do write. If you want to check out TSX’s Week 3 game previews, including the Bears vs. Seahawks, click here.

Wish I could be more positive on the Hawks’ prospects this Sunday, but they are already the most beat-up team in the league entering Week 3. This would be a tight matchup to begin with, but with Seattle missing up to 10 starters come Sunday, the odds are stacked against a very competitive game. But, hey, at least it’s suppossed to be 72 and sunny!

What’s on your tailgate menu? Harpers’ early front-running entree item is chicken tacos… if we can figure out logistics.

The plan is to test out the lots on 4th ave. Just north of Royal Brougham on the east side of the street. Week 1 it was $40 for one lot and $45 for the other. Might as well do the cheaper unless the other offers toilies.

Hasselbeck still hoping to play

TSXlogo2Coach Jim Mora maintains that starting QB Matt Hasselbeck could play on Sunday, although Chicago head coach Lovie Smith wouldn’t mind the Seahawks quarterback taking a little time to heal his wounds.

“If I was Matt I’d just take a few weeks off,” joked Smith during a conference call with Seattle-area reporters on Wednesday. “There’s a lot of football left to go.” … (READ FULL REPORT)

TSXlogo2Turns out QB Matt Hasselbeck’s rib injury was not as serious as it looked on Sunday.

Medical tests revealed that Hasselbeck suffered a fractured rib in the team’s 23-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. However, the veteran quarterback who turns 34 on Friday expects to play on Sunday when the Chicago Bears travel to Qwest Field. … (READ FULL REPORT)

Good news, Matt … now get better fast

Matt Hasselbeck has a fractured rib, but said he is “absolutely hoping to play” against the Bears.
While we appreciate Matt’s warrior mentality, don’t bet on him playing Sunday. Eagles QB Donovan McNabb cracked a rib in Week 1, sat out Sunday and isn’t certain to return even this week.
Matt said he has played with a similar injury during his time in Seattle. But as my wife eloquently pointed out a minute ago while sipping a John Daly on the deck: “I remember that … and he didn’t play very well.”
Now that’s the straight talk from a huge Matt admirer who didn’t blink for five minutes after he went down in a crumpled heap Sunday.
Here’s to a speedy recovery … with a cheers to Firefly.

TSXlogo2  There’s a chance the Seattle Seahawks’ best offensive lineman could be ready for an early-season, NFC West division showdown with the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Walter Jones, 35, participated in individual drills at the beginning of practice Wednesday but did not compete in 11-on-11 action with the team. Read Full Report

Hill out until at least Week 8

LeRoy Hill

LeRoy Hill

WLB LeRoy Hill’s groin injury is worse than initially believed, with ESPN’s John Clayton reporting that Hill will be out until at least Week 8. He’s looking into second opinions to determin if he’ll need surgery.
It’s a signifcant blow to the Sehawks as Hill is considered one of the more underrated linebackers in the game. It’s even worse considering journeyman Will Herring, in his third season in Seattle, is a significant drop-off as the fill-in starter.
